Ask the Expert – how can I stop my plectrum/pick slipping?

Mike WIlliams asks:

“I often have a problem keeping hold of my pick/plectrum, which tends to slip around between my thumb and forefinger. This doesn’t do much for the sound or my nerves, and isn’t very helpful when the pick pings inside the guitar. I’m not particularly good but bold enough to play for several children’s groups (church toddler’s, library and our son’s school). With some children’s songs I can get away with re-positioning the pick at an appropriate pause, but it would help my confidence if I could hold the pick more securely.”

 Andy replies:

It is partly a fine motor skills issue that will improve as your playing hours progress but it may also be to do with the thickness and type of plectrum/pick you use. If it’s too thick its easy to loose grip. Same happens if the pick is completely smooth plastic too. Try roughening it up with some sandpaper or use one of the slightly textured nylon picks. I use Dunlop .60mm for acoustic which seems to stay put and something slightly thicker like a 1mm for electric. Also if your hands get hot, oily or sweaty try to relax as much as possible as this may be due to nerves and washing with soap and drying them just before you play. Hope that helps.

The scene repeats itself over and over again every weekend–perhaps even in your church. It’s worship time, and the band is rockin’. The congregation is completely caught up in the worship experience. Eschewing hymnals as old-fashioned, the words are projected on 2 large screens above the stage. As the worship leader looks out over the worshiping throng, he (or she) internally reflects on the goodness of God, and decides to repeat the verse. Suddenly the congregation appears confused and stops singing. About halfway through they start up again, but the mood of the moment is obviously broken. What went wrong? That darn presentation computer operator messed up again! Or did they?

Ask the Expert – Getting the riff to work in I’ve Found Jesus

Steve Slaughter sent us this question:

“How does Stu G make the notes “stand out” in that riff of the chorus of I’ve Found Jesus? (Covered in disk 2 of the Musicademy Intermediate Worship Guitar Course) I’ve got the two chords of E and A that he’s playing and I know that he hammers on and pulls off of the notes on the A chord, but I’m not sure what he’s doing over the E chord.  I’m guessing it’s some sort of hammer on, but I can’t tell what notes he’s playing!

I love those sections of the course, esp, the song Majesty!! Your site is great.  I’m thinking of getting the acoustic course real soon for some more guitar instruction.”

Andy replies:

For the E chord at the beginning of the riff try spliting it into four ‘movements’

1. Play the E chord (A shape at fret 7) with a down, up, down, strum

2. Then move your hand and bar the 9th fret across the five thinnest strings with your 1st finger and play 1 down strum

3. Whilst still keeping the barre, hammer on the A string at fret 11 with your 3rd (ring) finger

4. Then, with that same shape held, strum -  down, up, but focus mainly on the D G and B strings that you have barred.

5. Move to the A shape.
