Ask the Expert – how can I stop my plectrum/pick slipping?

By Andy | April 30, 2009

holidng-a-plectrum

Mike WIlliams asks:

“I often have a problem keeping hold of my pick/plectrum, which tends to slip around between my thumb and forefinger. This doesn’t do much for the sound or my nerves, and isn’t very helpful when the pick pings inside the guitar. I’m not particularly good but bold enough to play for several children’s groups (church toddler’s, library and our son’s school). With some children’s songs I can get away with re-positioning the pick at an appropriate pause, but it would help my confidence if I could hold the pick more securely.”

 Andy replies:

It is partly a fine motor skills issue that will improve as your playing hours progress but it may also be to do with the thickness and type of plectrum/pick you use. If it’s too thick its easy to loose grip. Same happens if the pick is completely smooth plastic too. Try roughening it up with some sandpaper or use one of the slightly textured nylon picks. I use Dunlop .60mm for acoustic which seems to stay put and something slightly thicker like a 1mm for electric. Also if your hands get hot, oily or sweaty try to relax as much as possible as this may be due to nerves and washing with soap and drying them just before you play. Hope that helps.

Worship Leaders, You’re Killing Us – guest post from Mike Sessler

By Mike Sessler | April 29, 2009

worship-projection-software-2

The scene repeats itself over and over again every weekend–perhaps even in your church. It’s worship time, and the band is rockin’. The congregation is completely caught up in the worship experience. Eschewing hymnals as old-fashioned, the words are projected on 2 large screens above the stage. As the worship leader looks out over the worshiping throng, he (or she) internally reflects on the goodness of God, and decides to repeat the verse. Suddenly the congregation appears confused and stops singing. About halfway through they start up again, but the mood of the moment is obviously broken. What went wrong? That darn presentation computer operator messed up again! Or did they?

Newsletter – 29 April 2009

By Marie Page |

The launch of our two Worship Backing Band DVDs has been well received with great feedback to date. There really doesn’t seem to be anything else as contemporary or at this quality or price level on the market. We’ve had a few enquiries asking about the difference between the two products so have written a blog post to explain more.

You can view trailers at worshipbackingband.com and buy from our webstore.

Click below for the latest from the Musicademy blog:

  • The last post in our series on substitute guitar chords is a really helpful capo chord chart showing how to use a capo to play in awkward keys
  • A guest post from Jonny Baker, leader of Grace, an alternative worship community on combining liturgy and postmodern culture
  • A free backing track from our Worship Backing Band DVD for Brenton Brown’s Everlasting God. This is one from the Musicians Practice Tracks version with no guitars so very useful to play along to
  • Ask the Expert – Recommended bass guitar strings
  • Ask the Expert – can I put the Musicademy downloads onto an ipod?
  • Ask the Expert – Getting the guitar riff to work in I’ve Found Jesus

Click through and please do add your comments – its great to hear what you think about it all.

Watch out over the next few days for an exciting new guest post on worship tech and also the release of a new advanced vocal work-out CD. You can get these new blog posts as they happen via email or RSS feed.

And don’t forget to e-mail us your “Ask the Expert” questions.

All the best

Ask the Expert – Getting the riff to work in I’ve Found Jesus

By Andy | April 27, 2009

Steve Slaughter sent us this question:

“How does Stu G make the notes “stand out” in that riff of the chorus of I’ve Found Jesus? (Covered in disk 2 of the Musicademy Intermediate Worship Guitar Course) I’ve got the two chords of E and A that he’s playing and I know that he hammers on and pulls off of the notes on the A chord, but I’m not sure what he’s doing over the E chord.  I’m guessing it’s some sort of hammer on, but I can’t tell what notes he’s playing!

I love those sections of the course, esp, the song Majesty!! Your site is great.  I’m thinking of getting the acoustic course real soon for some more guitar instruction.”

Andy replies:

For the E chord at the beginning of the riff try spliting it into four ‘movements’

1. Play the E chord (A shape at fret 7) with a down, up, down, strum

2. Then move your hand and bar the 9th fret across the five thinnest strings with your 1st finger and play 1 down strum

3. Whilst still keeping the barre, hammer on the A string at fret 11 with your 3rd (ring) finger

4. Then, with that same shape held, strum -  down, up, but focus mainly on the D G and B strings that you have barred.

5. Move to the A shape.
