BBC Radio 1 DJ talks up church

By Marie@Musicademy | June 26, 2009

This clip from DJ Chris Moyles on his Breakfast Radio Show is so encouraging to hear. It shows that people with no personal experience of church can find a contemporary worship service surprisingly relevant to (post) modern culture. In the UK at least, a whole generation has little understanding of church other than traditional weddings and carol services. Church (and therefore Christianity) is sterotyped as old fashioned and irrelevant. Here Chris Moyles talks about a Pentecost service he saw on the BBC.

The service was called ‘That’s The Spirit!’ and shows worship from Kingsgate Community Church in Peterborough. See what you think.

As the author of this Youtube clip I didn’t expect it to get over 35,000 hits in just 14 days – possibly testimony to Chris’ popularity. But I also think there is a shared interest and genuine surprise that there are a growing number of substantial, contemporary and lively 21st century churches in the UK.

This is because of their relevant and contextualised message of Jesus Christ – a person who just will not be stereotyped and who’s teaching still cuts through the rubbish and hopelessness in today’s society. The message is the same but the relevancy of it comes through crystal clear to a new generation searching for hope when the “wrapper” is right.

It was fab! I saw the service on the TV with my parents (I stood in their hallway jumping around to O Happy Day and singing it at the top of my lungs!) Then to hear that Chris Moyles was talking about it on his breakfast show was awesome!

A friend of mine from church sent me the clip and then I sent it onto my Mum.
