Independent review of Vocaleze throat spray - does it really work?

By Steve Weeks | June 17, 2009

As the untrained singer with the Jazz Funk Legends called “Our Dad”, the closest I come to “technique” is to “Think of Tom Jones”!  I love to scream and shout - inducing audience frenzy and a personal state of Voice-Wreck.  Near the end of the set, my range is often reduced to half an octave, and after three nights running I can hardly talk, let alone sing. Maybe that’s why those generous people at Musicademy asked me to road-test VocalEze and ClearVoice; two very similar voice-saving throat spray products - almost identical in both packaging and ingredients.  However, I was a little concerned about this experiment; some medication can be indirectly harmful.  I believe Strepsils can get you in trouble because they anaesthetise your voice. This allows you to continue singing without realising the strain that’s happened - until the next day when you try to speak.stevesinging

Last night my band was privileged to play at the wedding of Quin Delport (WW Message Tribe in the old days, and fronts new power-pop band, “Shackleton”) - a lovely man with a great voice.  There would be lots of musicians and singers in the crowd, so I kind of expected I’d be trying too hard and wreck my voice again. Therefore a great opportunity to take with me a voice-saving vocal spray! Read More »

Guitar Chord of the Month - D7sus4

By Steve Weeks | June 11, 2009

|— |— |-O- |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— G (sus4)

|-O- |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— C (7th)

|— |-O- |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— A (5th)

|— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— D (1st)

|— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— X

|— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— X

I really the sound of this chord which can add a sense of texture or tension over basic chords. As it’s a sus4 it can be used over both D major and D minor chords. Also because all the notes are high up you can pick individual strings to find some nice motif sounds that will work over any chords in both the keys of G and C.

Chord of the Month - Emaj9

By Steve Weeks | May 14, 2009

We’ve not done a chord of the month recently due to the plethora of substitute chords in recent posts. Here’s a “E” Chord with major 7th and a 9th – very John Mayer!

 emaj9

Normally E9 would have a b7

You can take this down 4 frets for a CM79

The open 1st string is now a 3, not a 1

You can take this up 3 frets for a GM79

The open 1st string is now a 6, if you want to hear it…

What to include in a music chart

By Steve Weeks | May 12, 2009

Our Dad (Steve’s covers band) are doing a wedding tonight and I had to do a chart for a simple Van Morrison song. I attach it as an example that could be used for worship song notation.

The “problem” (at least for me!!) is to combine several objectives in one format:

include all the words!
show the sections and arrangement (repeats, structure, )

show the chords - and when to play them
(Issue: is each chord played for 1 bar, 2 bars, half a bar?)
condense to 1 sheet for those learning the song OR the arrangement

condense to 1 column for those who know both
End-To-End (i.e. no repeats) is better for adding roles in rehearsal
i.e. when to come in, when to go up or down, take solos,…
avoid writing & reading “real” music
(though I’d like one stave on which to write instrumental link phrases)

This example of words and chords, is notated without “music” ..no bar lines or diagrams,
but with the chords arranged as “one chord per bar” — “/” for repeat bars reduces clutter.

I think the key to simplicity is this…
The leader knows the song (!?) so he does not need the timing of the words
The musicians don’t need the timing of the words
They just need the song structure and the chords for the sections

BTW I used jazz-notation: “B-” instead of “Bm” to minimise the notation further.

Chord of the Month - E7#9 (the Jimi Hendrix chord)

By Steve Weeks | February 10, 2009

e79

E7#9 (otherwise known as the Hendrix Chord) is an interesting alternative to an E or E5.

It sounds really gritty and bluesy and works well if you want songs in E to sound a bit more ‘out there’. ‘Ideal for ‘Undignified’ or ‘I’ve Found Jesus’ endings.

Warning! Do not play this chord at sensitive moments in church! I did, but I don’t think anyone noticed.

The techie bit:

Its an “E” Chord with both major and minor 3rds!
The major 3rd is just a 3rd but
The minor 3rd is actually a #9 - no really!
Jimi would use this as a root chord (in the key of E)
Stevie Ray Vaughn would play it as a dominant 7th (in the key of Am)
Get jazzy! ..add a Bb in the bass between the E7#9 and the Am.
