Free worship rota planning tool

By Steve Weeks | March 2, 2010

We first published this post a couple of years ago but we’ve a lot more subscribers now so worth a second posting. I’ve been using this application for all sorts of rotas and scheduling meetings and its saved loads of time so have a read through to see how it can take some of your admin load.

The first problem with organising a rota is to know who is available for each time slot. Once upon a time you would call each person one at a time and ask if they can or cannot do each slot. These days you send out some emails, and get a few less back. The next task is to arrange the replies into a table of who’s available when.

In this article we’ll see how you can get Google to do a lot of this work for you.

Everything described here is completely free.

You will need a Google Account. No-one else will need a Google Account. This does not mean that you need to switch to Google mail, nor even acquire a Google email address. You can use the UserID and Password of your Google Account to access your secure Google Documents, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Feed Reader, and more. However, we’ll just be using Google Documents.

So, step by step, here we go… Read More »

Guitar Chord of the Month – Eadd9

By Steve Weeks | July 28, 2009

The “Eadd9 ” Chord works to enrich a softly played E Major, with a surprising easy-on-the-ear cluster dischord of three notes in a row (E, F# and G#).
This first fingering is fairly well-known – and is a good start because it is easy to see how the basic E shape is modified to lift the root note to a 2nd.

e2-i

However, for intermediate players the stretch is painful after only a short time.
This alternative is harder to understand (for those of us who don’t recognise notes so easily at the dusty end of the fretboard) but easier to play, and close to a few other “high-=position” chords which I’ll introduce later.

 e2-ii

Independent review of Vocaleze throat spray – does it really work?

By Steve Weeks | June 17, 2009

As the untrained singer with the Jazz Funk Legends called “Our Dad”, the closest I come to “technique” is to “Think of Tom Jones”!  I love to scream and shout – inducing audience frenzy and a personal state of Voice-Wreck.  Near the end of the set, my range is often reduced to half an octave, and after three nights running I can hardly talk, let alone sing. Maybe that’s why those generous people at Musicademy asked me to road-test VocalEze and ClearVoice; two very similar voice-saving throat spray products – almost identical in both packaging and ingredients.  However, I was a little concerned about this experiment; some medication can be indirectly harmful.  I believe Strepsils can get you in trouble because they anaesthetise your voice. This allows you to continue singing without realising the strain that’s happened – until the next day when you try to speak.stevesinging

Last night my band was privileged to play at the wedding of Quin Delport (WW Message Tribe in the old days, and fronts new power-pop band, “Shackleton”) – a lovely man with a great voice.  There would be lots of musicians and singers in the crowd, so I kind of expected I’d be trying too hard and wreck my voice again. Therefore a great opportunity to take with me a voice-saving vocal spray! Read More »

Guitar Chord of the Month – D7sus4

By Steve Weeks | June 11, 2009

|— |— |-O- |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— G (sus4)

|-O- |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— C (7th)

|— |-O- |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— A (5th)

|— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— D (1st)

|— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— X

|— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— |— X

I really the sound of this chord which can add a sense of texture or tension over basic chords. As it’s a sus4 it can be used over both D major and D minor chords. Also because all the notes are high up you can pick individual strings to find some nice motif sounds that will work over any chords in both the keys of G and C.

Chord of the Month – Emaj9

By Steve Weeks | May 14, 2009

We’ve not done a chord of the month recently due to the plethora of substitute chords in recent posts. Here’s a “E” Chord with major 7th and a 9th – very John Mayer!

 emaj9

Normally E9 would have a b7

You can take this down 4 frets for a CM79

The open 1st string is now a 3, not a 1

You can take this up 3 frets for a GM79

The open 1st string is now a 6, if you want to hear it…
