Something Old, Something New - Combining liturgy and postmodern culture

By Jonny Baker | April 24, 2009

Jonny Baker is a leader and member of Grace, an alternative worship community in London, England. I’ve followed his various blogs for a while and he’s kindly agreed to us posting some articles here. This is a piece originally written for Leadership Journal.

Dave White has found a way to present the Easter story to thousands of non-Christians in a public space. He uses tradition. It may sound impossible, but he represents a growing trend that blends historic Christian worship with contemporary forms. In Dave’s case, this means taking the traditional Stations of the Cross, which tell the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection, and recasting them for his community in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Dave began by gathering a group of artists to creatively reinterpret the Stations. With the support of the local city council, Dave and his team spent all night setting up experiential stations along a trail in the Hamilton public gardens. Four thousand visitors came through the breathtaking scene. At one station, each person was given a cross-shaped ice cube to carry on a leaf to help them reflect on the event. At another station, a lake was filled with hundreds of rubber ducks with a rifle aiming at them, symbolizing Jesus’ fate. Read More »

Free Webinar with Dan Wilt

By Marie Page | April 21, 2009

Its short notice but we’ve just heard about a free webinar with Dan Wilt, Director of the Institute of Contemporary and Emerging Worship Studies at St Stephens University, New Brunswick Canada. Dan runs live courses that many of the well known worship leaders (Brian Doerksen, Brenton Brown, Kathryn Scott, Tim Hughes, David Ruis etc) have attended with a view to honing their song writing skills.

This is a great opportunity to access some of Dan’s input and current thinking on worship free of charge. The seminar will explore the attitudes, skills and values that mark great, effective worship leaders of our day. Gain practical tools for leading, pastoring, mentoring, growing and guiding a community in worship.

The gathering of believers vs open mic night

By Marie Page | April 7, 2009

This is the another in our series “Thoughts on church and worship, discipleship and more”. Here is a description of one church’s model of a worship gathering. Its probably pretty different to yours but that’s fine - do comment below on other models that you find work in your communities.

The gathering of believers – a model for worship and ministry
If ever there is a context to develop the working reality of the priesthood of believers it is in the gathering together of the body of Christ. In first Corinthians chapter fourteen Paul encourages that when we come together we each bring something to share: a hymn, a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation, and that everything be done for the strengthening of the church.

We have chosen an open format as our preferred framework for our community gatherings so that our team can share in the ministry just like Paul encourages in this chapter. We are not intending for this open format to be like an open mic night at the local coffee house. Neither are we suggesting that we come together to wait on the Lord and then, after a lengthy period of silence, share what we have heard in the silence. Rather, we are encouraging our core team to come prepared with something to share and to participate in the ministry out of the overflow of their lives. Read More »

Brian McLaren on Worship Songs

By Marie Page | March 26, 2009

brian-mclarenThere is quite a gathering movement for change in the content and style of contemporary worship songs. We thought you would be interested in this open letter to song writers which Brian McLaren wrote and has kindly given us permission to publish:

Greetings, fellow songwriters, fellow worshippers, fellow leaders in worship, fellow musician/artists, and fellow followers of Jesus:
For the last few years, I have been privileged to be “on the road” a lot, speaking mostly with young emerging leaders. I suppose I was asked to speak to them because of some over-forty quota system, and also because many emerging leaders are grappling with the issue of postmodernity, an issue I lost most of my hair  rappling with myself—and about which I have written some books. Back home, I am a pastor serving a church that has committed itself to enter the postmodern transition and deal with its issues boldly and confidently. I say “boldly and confidently” knowing that there are as yet no maps to guide a church in this adventure—so we have no real idea where we’re going except that we’re trying to follow Jesus. I guess we feel very much like the children of Israel having left the Egypt of modernity and crossed the Sea into the unknown wilderness…we’re trusting that a God-sent cloud-pillar and fire-cloud will guide us by day and night.

One of the side benefits of travel—as a musician myself, I have truly enjoyed hearing dozens of worship bands and worship leaders, and spending literally hours at almost every event being led in worship.
There are many observations and affirmations I could imagine sharing with you who are worship leaders. There are so many encouraging trends, along with a few persistent problems. But one observation stands out. It is actually a request more than an observation: a request for the songwriters among us to explore and then lead us into some new lyrical/ spiritual territory.

One hears a lot of complaints about lame music, trite lyrics, theological shallowness, etc., etc., in the world of contemporary Christian music. Read More »
