Review from the September 2011 edition of Worship Leader Magazine:

Randy Cross reviews Hand 2 Hand:

"There is a trend that has been a part of the counterculture for decades, but of late has become more mainstream and embraced by those in worship arts ministries – drum circles. Musicademy has just released a great resource for any church to incorporate this trend into their worship mix. The 2 DVD set, Hand 2 Hand: Hand Drumming and Percussion is the primer for those wishing to begin a unique, percussive worship experience.

When viewing the DVD, Tood Rundgred’s hit “Bang the Drum All Day” may very well come to mind. The DVDs feature instructors from Psalmdrummers, a Christian organization whose “vision is to stir up prayer and worship and lead people to Christ through drumming”.

Covering 16 basic core techniques, disc one features everything you need to know about playing hand drums. From bass tones to skin tones, from feathering to rolls, the video provides the example and then it provides application through practice exercises that are easy to follow and use, all the while employing tips on posture while playing, hand positions and drum tuning. Disc two continues the hand drumming education by building on the basics of disc one. Basic techniques are solidified and amplified by exercises that include getting into the combination of drumming patterns, how to feel the groove and flow with it as well as against it, and integrating hand drums with a drum kit.

Musicademy once again produces an instructional DVD that focuses on the unique instrumental worship that a drum circle can be. Everything you need to know to begin or perfect your worship environment through the use of drum circles is on this DVD."

DVD 1 covers 16 core and supplementary techniques to help you correctly master the fundamentals of good hand drumming including:

  • Good posture and hand positioning
  • Hand drum tuning
  • Open, closed, muffler & bass tones
  • Open & closed slap
  • Heel & toe techniques
  • Single & two handed flam
  • Finger tip, feathering, sliding & skin tones
  • Doubles
  • 5, 7 & 9 stroke rolls

DVD2 builds on the core techniques with a range of play along exercises all demoed at a range of tempos between 60 & 176 bpm.

These exercises will help you learn about:

  • Combining patterns
  • Using fills & accents
  • Playing with & against the groove
  • Swinging a straight groove
  • Developing feel in live playing
  • Integrating rhythms with the drum kit
  • Playing as a soloist or with one other instrument
  • Playing as a band member

2 DVDs (total approximately 2 hours) packed with lessons showing multiple hand drumming techniques from Psalm Drummer Mark Jones and team.

Mark Jones chairs the Psalm Drummers Association, working with the team that oversee the activities and running of Psalm Drummers, the international network of Christian drummers who use their gifts for prayer, praise and worship.

Ease Of Use
Enjoyed the DVD and learned a lot from it. I would like to have seen a bit more on some of the other percussion instruments. That said, however, it was a great value for the money.

Excellent product, well worth the money. Lots of good material. Nothing significant to criticise. | Review by Steve
Ease Of Use
The first DVD starts at a level for complete newcomers to hand drumming, and works up through good techniques and ecercises, progressing in complexity. You really need a large-head drum (ideally a djembe, but a conga would do) to run through these exercises. On the DVD box it says "perfect for dejmbe, congas or bongos". - I'd be cautious about bongos because the head size often isn't physically big enough to do the technique exercise being learned. But once into it, the material and the developing level of complexity is really good and takes you on at a realistic pace.
The second DVD goes into technique development with graded tempos. Also introduces a stroke / hand / tempo notation which is very helpful. (a bit like chord/ stroke notation for guitars). Pattern combinations are worked.on. The section on playing alongside a drum kit is superb ('cos thats probably where a lot of church hand drummers will start). The examples of playing with other musicians could maybe have gone a bit more into a "typical" church band (a solo sax is not normal!) - but it does show how versatile hand drumming can be. But in overall terms this is superb stuff and well worth the money and the effort of learning this way.
