The Must-Haves for the Worship Musician – Surrended (part 1)

 

Surrendered Part 1 – Surrendered to God

 

No doubt you’ve heard about the challenge given to D.L. Moody: “It remains to be seen what God will do with a man who gives himself up wholly unto Him.” (or some variation of…) And Moody’s answer was basically “I’ll be that man.” And he was. We usually hear this exchange in a sermon about surrender. The problem is the preacher doesn’t tell us that this falls in the category of “WAY easier said than done.”

A mentor once said to me, “one of the beautiful things about following Christ is that it’s daily. And one of the most frustrating things about following Christ is that it’s daily.” The new mercies (Lam. 3) of God can’t be experienced fully without a new day’s surrender. (1 Cor 15:31/Rom 12:1) Sure, there are a few things that I’ve surrender once for all (by God’s grace), but I have to give up my pride, agenda, sin, etc. every day.

This isn’t exclusive for worship musicians. But consider that the responsibility of worship musician as a leader/teacher (see bonus) leader/teacher. But it’s ultimately about loving Jesus more than music or ministry. And the surrender into Jesus’ arms each day is a real good start.

Read Lamentations 3:22-26.

22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”
25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the LORD.

Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.

They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. (NIV)

The LORD’s kindness never fails! If he had not been merciful, we would have been destroyed.

The LORD can always be trusted to show mercy each morning.

Deep in my heart I say, “The LORD is all I need; I can depend on him!”

The LORD is kind to everyone who trusts and obeys him.

It is good to wait patiently for the LORD to save us. (CEV)

Discuss:

  1. God’s mercies are new NO MATTER WHAT. But what are some of the conditions for experiencing the new mercies of God (see vv.24 – 26—wait, hope, seek, wait)?
  2. How does waiting, hoping and seeking relate to “surrender”?
  3. What are some signs that might indicate that we love music and ministry more than Jesus?
  4. Does our “up-front” position demand a different responsibility from other ministries?Why or why not?
