Guest article from Dave Bilbrough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s funny how we have a tendency to evaluate good and bad.\u00a0 Recently I was reading an article on the current state of Christian music.\u00a0 \u2018Is it progressive or creative, or has it cocooned itself into a safe formula; i.e Coldplay beats Big Country\u2019, the writer asked.\u00a0 Whilst the arguments on both sides were convincing and articulate from composers and song leaders, I was left with this overriding feeling\u2026 are we not in danger of missing the point?\u00a0 What exactly is Christian worship music?\u00a0 Can it be defined as a style and set of words or is there something deeper going on when we play our musical expressions.\u00a0 Then I found it!\u00a0 A translation of a verse from 2 Chronicles 29 verse 27: surely it\u2019s about the song of the Lord\u2026\u00a0 \u2018And when the burnt offering began the song of the Lord began also\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>This song transcends all styles, cultures and barriers, and because it\u2019s from the Lord it\u2019s relevant to the \u2018now\u2019 for he is the God of the present as well as the past and the future.\u00a0 \u2018When the burnt offerings began\u2026\u2019\u00a0 Not to be confused with blood sacrifices, burnt offerings speak to us as new covenant people of surrender, brokenness and the realisation that human effort is not enough.\u00a0 Coming to an end of\u00a0ourselves, if you like.\u00a0 When we lay aside our unrealistic view of our own abilities and become involved with the reality of God\u2019s empowering presence in our lives, then the song of the Lord will surely rise.<\/p>\n<p>Believe me, styles will come and go.\u00a0 That which we think is cutting edge and fresh will soon be surpassed by another band or individual (!) breaking through.\u00a0 To limit our evaluation of worship music to comparisons with popular trends and to concentrate solely on what\u2019s marketable (!) is surely to devalue the potency of how we see true worship.<\/p>\n<p>Forget the old song running round your head and by surrendering allow His enabling power to be made visible in the ashes.\u00a0 Let the new song begin!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dave Bilbrough, writer of songs such as \u201cAbba Father\u201d, \u201cI am a New Creation\u201d and \u201cAll Hail the Lamb\u201d is one of the fathers of the modern day worship movement.
