{"id":6089,"date":"2011-06-10T12:32:14","date_gmt":"2011-06-10T12:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musicademy.com\/?p=6089"},"modified":"2021-03-25T13:20:12","modified_gmt":"2021-03-25T13:20:12","slug":"jammin-your-way-to-a-better-worship-band","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicademy.com\/blog\/jammin-your-way-to-a-better-worship-band\/","title":{"rendered":"Jammin\u2019 your way to a better worship band"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Jammin\u2019 your way to a better worship band \u2013<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Open Jam Sessions are the best recruiting, training, auditioning tool for small\/medium size churches. \u00a0At least that\u2019s what I think.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Big churches have a completely different set of problems when it comes to worship musicians than your average small\/medium sized church. \u00a0In a church of thousands, if you let every bass player of decent caliber (that would be allowed to play in a small-medium size church) he might only play a couple times a year. \u00a0I made a post about organizing musicians if you have the wonderful problem of too many musicians. \u00a0However, most churches I know tend to have the opposite problems: they don\u2019t have enough quality players to fill a full modern worship team every week.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">In our church our weekly instrumentation is:<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Drums<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Bass<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Keys<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Piano<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Electric Guitar (lead parts)<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Acoustic Guitar (or rhythm electric)<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Vocals (usually me plus the piano player and sometimes one other)<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Probably pretty typical for most of what you hear on worship albums, and what you see in most churches.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">You can condense it down to just 1 guitar or combine piano\/keyboard player if need be, but you are still looking at 4 or 5 musicians every week.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">If you are a smaller church having trouble filling your spots, my #1 recommendation is JAM sessions.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">When to have JAM sessions:<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">In a mobile churchplant, you could have them on Sunday afternoons since you have all the equipment set up already, you might as well get all the bang for your buck that you can. \u00a0Also, you have the maximum crowd there as people are likely to have Sunday afternoon\u2019s off and you can recruit directly from the congregation which is present. \u00a0You might have to feed them a little, but we musicians are usually quite happy to make music for food! It\u2019s a great way to fellowship and get to know each other better: foodowship (like fellowship but with food!)<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">For those of you with buildings, you might try an open jam session for an hour before your official midweek worship practice. \u00a0That way if a musician is good enough, you can invite them. \u00a0Same with foodowship here.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Another reason for one of these time slots is because it reduces the amount of time that your regular worship team members need to invest to be a part. \u00a0It\u2019s great to get your mature worship musicians on board with mentoring and training and auditioning the next generation. \u00a0They may not be able to participate every time, but it\u2019s much more likely if they just have to show up a little bit early or stay a little afterwards.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">We do midweek JAM from 4-5 on Wednesdays then dinner for the worship team followed by worship practice which includes biblestudy and prayer in addition to music practice. \u00a0We are helping out a churchplant in Maltby, www.thehighpointchurch.com and are going to experiment with the after church slot for their mobile setup and report on how it goes.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Who can come to a Jam Session? \u00a0Who do you advertise to?<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Anyone who wants to hang out and play and anyone who is interesting in learning. \u00a0We tell people they can bring instruments if they have them, but if not, just come on out anyway. \u00a0No instruments or previous experience are required. \u00a0Anyone can come 6th grade and up for free jamming and music lessons. \u00a0If you are patient enough, you would be surprised how good a 7th grade drummer can be. \u00a0Middleschoolers have tons of time to practice and often interest. \u00a0Think about the target audience for high school musical, school of rock, camp rock, \u2026 I have used 6th graders often before on Sunday mornings. \u00a0Don\u2019t look down on them because they are young\u2026 isn\u2019t there a scripture that says that;) \u00a0(Bonus to the first person who gives the reference in the comment box!)<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">What is the commitment?<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">This is the beauty of a jam session.
