It\u2019s like the mid-week rehearsal didn\u2019t occur. Or at best, it\u2019s three steps forward and two back. Transitions have been forgotten. Dynamic changes are sucked into some black hole in the collective band brain. And that major change in the chart we rehearsed several times has now caused a pre-service train wreck.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">Let me give you some possible solutions to this:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square; list-style-position: initial; list-style-image: initial; padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1.571em 1.571em;\">\n<li style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">Never make changes to songs. Once you\u2019ve played a song a certain way,\u00a0<strong><em>always<\/em><\/strong> play it that way, no matter what. There\u2019s less chance of messing up.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">Play only four chord songs. There\u2019s quite a few to choose from.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">Play only two songs per week. If the pastor wants a closer, tell him to go pound sand.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">Quote Bible verses to your team about preparing and serving and sacrifice, and frequently mention the widow who gave her last mite.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">Hire professional musicians.\u00a0 Your budget can handle it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">Use backing tracks instead of a band. Those players are always spot on, they won\u2019t show up late, and the drummer is never too loud.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px;\">One ministry I\u2019m acquainted with was able to eliminate the re-rehearsing issue altogether: they simply dropped their mid-week rehearsal and just practiced Sunday morning. [Yeah, that didn\u2019t work so hot.]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">So none of these possibilities are grabbing you? Me neither. So how can we retain what happens at rehearsal until Sunday\u2019s warm-up\/sound check?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">I think it starts with teaching our teams (and ourselves) the difference between practice and rehearsal. These two terms are often used interchangeably. I\u2019ve started to make a clear distinction for the sake of communicating a preferred future:\u00a0<strong>Practice is personal. Rehearsal is relational.<!--more--><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">Ever have a team member that you wanted to ask, \u201cHas your instrument been out of its case since the last Sunday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">I do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">But then that still, small elbow jabs me in the ribs and reminds me how often my guitar sits dormant between Sundays. Rather than guilt my team members (or myself), I\u2019m slowly retraining us to look differently at practice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\"><strong><em>Practice<\/em><\/strong> is personal preparation for the\u00a0<strong><em>rehearsal<\/em><\/strong>. When the song is learned by individuals in\u00a0<em>practice<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>rehearsal<\/em> then becomes about the team working together to shape each song and each segue into a worship experience for their fellow believers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\"><em>Practice is personal. Rehearsal is relational.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">Let\u2019s say I fail to prepare on my own for a new song. That puts me in survival mode during rehearsal. I\u2019m thinking of chord changes on the guitar and getting the melody right as the lead vocalist. I\u2019m scanning ahead in the chart to anticipate the repeats. My focus is on\u00a0<em>me<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">The team follows my lead: their heads are buried in their stands. They aren\u2019t listening to each other. They aren\u2019t concerned with dynamics. They\u2019re fright-reading. Just like\u00a0<em>me<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">When we neglect the work of personal preparation, the mid-week team gathering becomes the \u201clearning event.\u201d As a result, the Sunday morning warm-up\/sound-check is an exercise in reminding each other of turnarounds, tags, dynamics, who lays out where, etc. What should have been a \u201crun-through\u201d becomes a \u201credo\u201d of Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\">We need to put a new vision before our team:\u00a0<strong>Practice is personal.
