{"id":6743,"date":"2011-09-22T15:04:54","date_gmt":"2011-09-22T15:04:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musicademy.com\/?p=6743"},"modified":"2019-08-02T11:42:51","modified_gmt":"2019-08-02T11:42:51","slug":"a-revolution-in-writing-and-sharing-worship-songs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicademy.com\/blog\/a-revolution-in-writing-and-sharing-worship-songs\/","title":{"rendered":"A revolution in writing and sharing worship songs?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You might have come across RESOUNDworship.org &#8211; a website sharing new worship songs for free, by a relatively unknown group of writers.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had no major-label backing, little or no budget, and have worked on it mostly in our spare time, and yet the site has over 8.500 subscribers and has resourced churches worldwide.\u00a0 And we\u2019re thinking &#8211; there must be plenty of other people out there with great songs who could be doing this!\u00a0 So we thought we\u2019d share our story, and see if we couldn\u2019t spark a revolution&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We started off with the same questions as thousands of worship songwriters around the world &#8211; how can we improve our lyrics so they are more biblical and inspiring?\u00a0\u00a0 How can we make our music contemporary and engaging, yet still singable in the average church?\u00a0 And how can we share our stuff with the wider church, without a publishing deal or a slot at the latest festival?<\/p>\n<p>So we dreamt up the idea of a small group, writing songs for their local church, and meeting a few times a year with the expressed aim of critiquing one another\u2019s lyrics and music.\u00a0 We were inspired by the story of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jubilate.co.uk\/\">Jubilate Group<\/a>, who since the 1960s have been producing material for worship that has been through a peer critique process.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know then just how hard that would sometimes be &#8211; playing your \u2018baby\u2019 to the rest of the group, only to be met with an awkward silence, or the classic line: \u201cWell, I think you\u2019ve made a good start, but&#8230;\u201d!<\/p>\n<p>We started a closed web forum to continue the conversations and revisions online, but have found that it is vital to continue meeting face-to-face for good relationships; we pray and worship together, and have grown close.\u00a0 Although the process is sometimes frustrating (especially when two bits of critique contradict each other!) we have definitely developed as writers through the journey and produced much better songs as a result.\u00a0 For example &#8211; the Easter song <a href=\"http:\/\/www.resoundworship.org\/song\/on_the_darkest_day_of_all\">On the Darkest Day<\/a> originally began with the metaphor of light and dark, but then moved off in other images of the resurrection.\u00a0 It was fed-back that the light\/dark images should continue throughout the lyrics, and this led to a much stronger development of the initial idea.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The songs go through an extra anonymous check process when we send them off to a panel of Bible experts, including staff at London School of Theology &#8211; again, this can sometimes be painful, but worth it!\u00a0 Then we record the best of them onto laptops as good quality demos.\u00a0 It is a balancing act to present the song in a fresh and engaging way, without over-producing or adding musical flourishes that will put the song outside the reach of an \u2018average\u2019 church band.\u00a0 A good example of where we think this has worked well is our most recent post &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.resoundworship.org\/song\/you_are_a_refuge_arms\">You are a refuge (Arms)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The next step was to develop a website &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.resoundworship.org\/\">RESOUNDworship.org<\/a>.\u00a0 With the generous support of the Jubilate Group we launched our first site in 2007, committed to sharing mp3s, lead sheets and chord charts for free.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know that in just four years the website would have attracted over 8,500 subscribers, or generated feedback from local churches all over the world, such as these:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA fantastic resource for the worshipping church. Simple to use and a great way for band members and singers to learn new songs and to introduce them to the congregation.\u201d\u00a0 <em>Martin<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur church has been through a very hard couple of years without a minister&#8230; I want to be honest about how we feel.\u00a0 This song [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.resoundworship.org\/song\/you_lead_us_through_the_wilderness\">You lead us through<\/a>] has provided \u00a0just the right balance between faith &amp; the struggles we face both as a church and as individuals.\u201d <em>Erika<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2018We have sung &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.resoundworship.org\/song\/when_our_songs_have_mercy\">When our songs<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; it was quite hard-hitting as we sang it at a service following a period of xenophobic violence where our church was quite instrumental in caring for victims who had been violently removed from their shacks \u00a0 in the squatter camps near our town&#8230;\u201d <em>Linda, South Africa<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Due to demand we have added piano scores, backing tracks, and the occasional choir and orchestra score to the free downloads.\u00a0 We have also been thrilled by the response we get to seasonal material &#8211; Christmas and Easter are always our most popular periods, and we get lots of emails telling stories of how the songs have touched guests and regular attenders.\u00a0 Here are a few &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found your website when I was trying to find some new and different Christmas songs.\u00a0 We loved them!\u00a0 Besides the wonderful music, the lyrics brought the scriptures to life.\u00a0 We will be using them for years to come, I assure you.\u201d <em>Heather<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.resoundworship.org\/song\/on_christmas_day\">On Christmas Day<\/a>&#8230; contains finely crafted theology in a 12\/8 feel with an anthemic chorus.\u00a0 <em>Bob Kauflin, WorshipMatters.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> \u201c<\/em>I used this [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.resoundworship.org\/song\/what_kind_of_throne\">What kind of throne<\/a>] at Christmas, and it was very well received, but I have found that this song echoes with a message that needs to be shared year round, so I&#8217;m using it again and again.\u201d\u00a0 <em>Peter<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re in an exciting period right now, having just relaunched our website with new features, new songs and a fresh interface.\u00a0 We\u2019ve already had great feedback:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRESOUNDworship.org was already one of the most creative developments in \u00a0\u00a0 worship in recent years, taking seriously the theological truth that the Spirit is \u00a0 poured out on the whole church, not just on songwriters and publishers.
