{"id":8010,"date":"2012-03-29T14:25:05","date_gmt":"2012-03-29T14:25:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musicademy.com\/?p=8010"},"modified":"2019-07-31T11:07:01","modified_gmt":"2019-07-31T11:07:01","slug":"7-reasons-music-techs-are-late-with-the-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.musicademy.com\/blog\/7-reasons-music-techs-are-late-with-the-words\/","title":{"rendered":"7 reasons music techs are late with the words"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Don\u2019t be LATE! \u00a0My fellow media technicians. \u00a0Let me make a request to you pretty please. \u00a0It doesn\u2019t matter what presentation software you are using. \u00a0Powerpoint, Keynote,Propresenter, EasyWorship, Media Shout, Song Show Plus, \u2026 \u00a0It doesn\u2019t matter. \u00a0I would say probably THE #1 most distracting thing about using media in worship is when we put the wrong words up \u2026 which we all know to avoid, but a very close #2 that happens ALL THE TIME, is waiting to put up the words until we are already supposed to be singing them! \u00a0If we are already supposed to be singing the line when it goes up, you are too late! \u00a0You need to have the words up there BEFORE we are to start singing them.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Why are we late so often?<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">1) You aren\u2019t paying attention to what is going on right now.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">There are a lot of fancy things to look at, especially in some of our modern presentation programs. \u00a0We can be changing the little labels to read \u201cchorus\u201d, be preparing the announcement or video slides, \u2026<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">During the worship time itself, please CONCENTRATE ON WHAT IS GOING ON RIGHT AT THE MOMENT. \u00a0Resist the urge to tinker.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">2) You don\u2019t know how the song goes.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Chances are the worship team has practiced before this. \u00a0Chances are this song is available online beforehand. \u00a0You can learn the songs just like the musicians do. \u00a0Make it happen guys!<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">3) You know the song too well<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">You know the song inside out and don\u2019t notice that the words aren\u2019t on the big screen. \u00a0Sing along please and NOTICE!<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">4) You are thinking like a musician<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">You can\u2019t hit \u201cnext slide\u201d on the downbeat. \u00a0You\u2019re too late then. \u00a0Not a lot, but enough to be distracting every single time. \u00a0Put the words up BEFORE we need to start singing them!<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">5) You are \u201cplaying it safe\u201d<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Resist the urge! \u00a0Yes, you might be wrong about what is coming next. The worship leader might skip the prechorus and go straight to the chorus, or repeat the chorus instead of going to the next verse. \u00a0And people would notice that. And yes, it would be distracting, but NOT AS DISTRACTING AS BEING LATE ALL THE TIME! \u00a0You are helping to LEAD. \u00a0You can\u2019t follow.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">6) You are afraid of cueing people too early<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Don\u2019t worry if you put the words up \u201ctoo soon\u201d. \u00a0They won\u2019t start singing in the wrong spot. They will follow the worship leader just like the rest of the band. \u00a0It\u2019s not like you are following the bouncy ball above the words and you need to give it to them right before, or they\u2019ll mess up. Besides, some people like to be reading and thinking about the words before they sing them. Give them that chance! \u00a0Don\u2019t worry about being early!<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">7) The Worship Leader changes things on the fly<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Yes, we do that. \u00a0Some more than others. \u00a0Some with more clear signals than others. \u00a0Some of our churches to the songs \u201cjust like the CD\u201d or \u201cJust like we practiced\u201d. \u00a0I personally think that this is often a waste of the possibilities of LIVE MUSIC. That\u2019s the main advantage of LIVE MUSIC\u2026 we can jump around, we can change things. \u00a0Otherwise we might as well put on an iTunes playlist. \u00a0That would sound better. \u00a0No really. \u00a0It would be mixed to perfection, perfectly compressed, \u2026 and completely unable to respond to what was happening in the room at that particular \u00a0moment. \u00a0What a waste! \u00a0Let\u2019s all work together to make a creation that could not have happened anywhere else on the planet and really matters. This is OUR offering to God. \u00a0Prepare prepare prepare \u2026. and then let the Spirit lead!<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">One more suggestion: Cooperation!<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">Maybe let someone else run the presentation<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">If all else fails, there are actually multiple skills required to put together a worship service. \u00a0Maybe you have terminal ADHD\/ADD and it doesn\u2019t matter how hard you try \u2026 you are great at building and preparing the presentation \u2026 but you can\u2019t put up the right slide at the right time if your life depended on it\u2026. Ask for help! \u00a0There is probably someone who wouldn\u2019t be able to put together the presentation to save their life, but clicking on the words that we are singing at the right time would be a piece of cake to them. \u00a0Maybe we need to find partners to can team up, rather than expecting one person to have all the skills all rolled into one: propresenter operator, propresenter builder, photoshop, imovie, \u2026. \u00a0Can someone help you?<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">THANK YOU!<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -10000px; top: 0px; width: 1px; height: 1px; overflow-x: hidden; overflow-y: hidden;\">I don\u2019t mean to just be hard on you. \u00a0Yes, your job is difficult. \u00a0One of the most difficult and important in the whole band. That\u2019s how important and helpful YOU are! \u00a0And people don\u2019t understand how hard it is. \u00a0Computers hang and freeze, worship leaders change their minds, don\u2019t get stuff to you in advance, you have to program, spell check, \u2026. \u00a0tun lights on and off maybe, run sound, \u2026. and the only time people notice you is if you make a mistake or put up some artwork that someone thinks is \u201cdistracting\u201d \u2026. It\u2019s a pretty thankless job sometimes. I know. \u00a0So\u2026Thank you so very much for your service my dear media friends!
