The Must-Haves for the Worship Musician – Called

The Must-Haves for the Worship Musician – Called

Calling

Called to ministry…
… isn’t a matter of desire. Just because I WANT to sing, or play or lead doesn’t mean I should.
…isn’t about talent or gifting.
…isn’t permanent. We don’t own our position on the team. Andy Stanley says it best – “Leadership is a stewardship. It is temporary…” We need to hold our positions in an open hand – allowing God to give more or take away.
…prepares for a subsequent calling. Time spent on a worship team is training grounds for something more. Also, people may need an additional training ground before they can join the team.
…implies an invitation. If no one invited me, I’m at the wrong party. That doesn’t mean I shouldn’t seek an invitation if I feel called. But in the end, if none is given, I need to determine if it’s a “No”, a “Not Right Now”, or a “Not Right Here.”
…is affirmed by peers and confirmed by leadership.
…is an invitation to serve and build the church. Not for our “talents to be used.” The call is to build the Kingdom, not our egos.
…is an expectation to produce good fruit.
…can be shelved, but not indefinitely ignored.
…requires humility.

1. The calling to be a follower of Christ and the calling to be on the worship team are certainly different. But in what ways are they alike?
2. Which aspect of being called jumped out at you personally? Why?
3. Often worship team members will say they joined the team so their “talents could be used.” Why is this unhealthy?
4. Is your spot on the worship team yours as long as you want it? Why or why not?
5. Generally, is it harder for worship team musicians to see themselves as servants? Why or why not?

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him.
Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
