Two Hallelujah Chorus Trainwrecks

By Marie@Musicademy | November 29, 2011

Click on the grey arrow button below to listen to a short trainwreck of Handel’s finest. It sounds as if the organist could have done with our Playing By Ear DVDs.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

And watch below to see what else can go wrong with an amateur production of The Messiah.

What goes around comes around – if you see what I mean…

So, we should just let the mega-churches who have budgets, professional actors (on the stage and in the pulpit) and full-blown orchestras do all the messing up? I thought so.

Sadly, whoever put together this piece, with his opening lines, doesn’t realize that this could not possibly have been a “small church” production. A small church would have had the children in bathrobes and burlap bags, with an old, worn-out doll in a cradle, re-enacting the story of the nativity. A Big Box Church would have had live animals (complete with camels stampeding and seriously injuring people in the pews…go on, just YouTube it and you’ll see). Sometimes, simple is best. And small is always better. Avoid the sentimentality and pragmatism of it all and most big churches would close. Oh wait, check the stats… most of them are.
