The story behind the new Graham Kendrick song – Sailor’s Song

By Marie@Musicademy | June 28, 2012

This Sunday 8th July is Sea Sunday. In the short interview clip below Graham Kendrick talks about writing a song for The Sailor’s Society as well as a description of the work of the Society (click on the arrow below).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The song borrows lines from the old hymn Oh The Deep Deep Love of Jesus. You can listen to a recording of the song in the YouTube clip below.

Here is a link to the piano score for the song. The song is available as a MultiTrack backing tracks and also as MultiTrack Pro Wav stems (for Ableton users).

The Sailor’s Song – Graham Kendrick

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus,
Shore-less, boundless, full and free;
Empty cross and tomb proclaiming
God, my Father’s love for me.
And when storms of life are raging;
Home and loved ones far away;
I will listen for the voice that
Calmed the waves on Galilee.
Chorus
Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus,
Vast unmeasured boundless free;
Deeper than the deepest ocean
Is my Saviour’s love for me.

Through the long, cold nights of waiting
Or the weary work-long day,
One who made the star-lit heavens
Travels in the boat with me.
Bridge
Though it seems at times He’s sleeping
While the towering waters rage,
Everlasting arms surround me
Always, always.
Friend of mine, yes friend of sinners,
Teach me your befriending love –
Like a current through me flowing
From the Father’s heart above.

First stanza of chorus: Samuel Trevor Francis (1834-1925).
Dedicated to the world’s 1.2 million merchant seafarers and to the Sailors’ Society,

    Very cool. A significant perspective for the Mariner, and musical components that are a great match. Quite “singable” for the non-musician, and draws attention to the depth and breadth of the love of Christ. (Boston, MA.)
