Using orchestral instruments in your worship team

By Tim | April 14, 2009

Churches often have orchestral or single melody instruments like violin, sax and flute in worship teams. Most players like to read from the music and tend to play the melody line. Here Tim Martin (pictured above with the musicians from our upcoming orchestral instruments DVD) advises on playing in a more improvised style.

The majority of single melody instrumentalists have been classically trained. This means that they read music really well but often struggle to play in a more fluid improvised style. In contemporary worship settings, the lead vocalist and congregation are singing the melody line so it makes sense for instruments such as brass, strings and woodwind to play either a harmony line or something more improvised such as a melodic “fill”. Ask the Expert - Singing Whilst Playing

By Tim | March 6, 2009

Lindsay Hiratzka sent us this question:

I am the bassist and I play mostly by ear.  As a result, my approach to playing bass is similar to my approach to singing, hearing in my mind what I want to play, then playing it.  I also love to sing, but I can’t seem to marry the two.  Is there a quick fix or is it just years of practice?

Tim Martin, who also covers this question in our worship keyboard DVDs, answers:
People often experience difficulty when learning to play and sing at the same time. There is no reason why this should be harder on one instrument than another (unless you have to blow the instrument!) so we can consider the main issues together. Read More »

Free Video Lesson - 10 things to do with chords on a keyboard

By Tim | January 27, 2009

Here is a free clip from our Intermediate Worship Keyboard DVDs. Tim Martin gives 10 ideas to make chords-based playing more interesting.

There are six hours of great instruction like this on the full 3-DVD course. Volume 1 starts with some simple lessons explaining how to move from traditional to chords-based playing; it then shows you how to add interest and improvise using melodic fills, auxilliary and passing notes.

The course then cranks it up a gear getting you to work on left and right hand rhythm skills as well as integrating suspended and extended chords into your playing.

There’s also plenty on worship leading, using string, pads, electric piano and organ sounds. We’ve incorporated a buyers guide (Tim has also written a recent blog piece on recommended keyboards for church) and plenty of instruction to enable you to develop the skills to play by ear.

Ask The Expert - T-Loop Feedback Whistles

By Tim | January 16, 2009

Jon Foyle asked this question:

Our church has a t-loop and we often find that the guitar amps for the music band pick up t-induction-loopsignals from the sound system that can lead to feedback whistles. We have tried placing the amps off the ground but it is unfortunate that the area that the band sets up seems to be very close to the t-loop path in the floor. Is there any way we can screen the amps from the t-loop signals? The only solution we have found so far is to turn off the amp mix to the t-loop circuit. Read More »
